Months after the whole incident with the archbishop, Voltruist was to study and even go with hunters on a mission, before he was ship out to his own church. The vatican decided that if Voltruist wanted to be violent, then he could be so with the hunters and help destroy monsters. So he was gathering things he need for the mission.
